Cats can be taught to use scratching post with patience, praise Introduce your cat to a scratching post. It should be strong and sturdy and tall enough so that your cat can stretch to his full length while using it. Introduce your cat to the post by stroking his paws against it. Scent it with catnip and put it where he likes to scratch. If you catch him clawing something off-limits, stop with a firmno and a loud clap.
Take him immediately to his scratching post and praise him when he uses it. Be patient and kind. He should get the idea.
