Connection classes link students to life skills The purpose of connection classes is to connect what students learn in school with skills that they will be using throughout their lives. Connections classes at W-WMS consist of band, physical education and health, career exploration, study skills, business and information technology and chorus. Students are assigned to Band Connections by request. Approximately 25 percent of the middle school student body is active in the band. Rising eighth grade students are offered the opportunity to tryout for the high school marching band for fall football season. Business and information technology connections classes teach students skills that are essential for school, work, and life in today's society. In all grade levels, students are using computer applications within the context of their core academic courses. Sixth grade students learn proper keyboarding techniques and are also introduced to desktop publishing, presentations, spreadsheets, and computer graphing. Computer Applications Connections is taught to the seventh grade students. These students practice their keyboarding technique and expand their previously learned skills. Eighth grade students are offered Essential Skills in Business as their connections class. This course applies the skills they have learned in previous classes within a business environment. Choral Connections helps students develop their singing voices. The class utilizes memorization, public speaking and presentation, as well as practice skills in the development of their voices. These same skills can be applied to any class and to many life situations. Students at W-WMS participate in health and physical education in order to develop good habits that promote a lifestyle of healthy living. Students learn about abstinence and how to make healthy decisions regarding their life. Our students are also encouraged to improve their personal fitness levels by being exposed to a variety of activities and sports.
As the Career Explorations teacher for grades six, seven, and eight, Ms. Gloria Rhodes helps students develop self-awareness and explore their interests and values, skills and aptitudes, personality and learning styles as they begin to consider their chosen careers. In so doing, they investigate career clusters and examine numerous career choices.
