'Jolly Playmate'
. Nita Riley and Laura Houpt made a trip to Jacksonville, Fla., to see Nita's granddaughter Elizabeth and her family during the Christmas holidays. They stayed at a beautiful Bed and Breakfast in Jacksonville. When the owner of the B&B found out they were from Washington- Wilkes she told them that she had just been through Washington-Wilkes three days before and had lunch at Sophie's. She said that they were served by a tall, handsome young man. Laura was delighted to say, "That was my son Charlie." Once a resident of Washington-Wilkes, you just can't get away. Somebody almost everywhere knows somebody from Washington-Wilkes! Be careful that you make a good impression for our hometown. Nita and Laura got the Christmas spirit, helping Elizabeth and her family decorate the tree and put up other decorations. .
At a family birthday dinner last week, the "oldies" remembered a nonsense song they used to sing as children, 60 years ago. They remembered most of the words and the tune was one of those that sticks in your mind. For 10 days now I have had that tune running through my mind, and have tried to come up with the words that were missing. Here are the words we remembered. If any of you remember others, call me -- 2636 -- so I can get it out of my mind. People like to "knock" City Hall. But I want to praise City Hall. I called last Wednesday morning to report a street light out in front of The News-Reporter. In just a little while the workers in charge of the lighting were here to replace the bulb. And people coming to buy papers that night (Wednesday) could once again see to do so. Thanks! . I recently reported that the Total Fitness Center on Court Street would be moving around the corner to the building formerly occupied by Dave's TV -- and it is. But Washington Dance Academy is also going to be located in that building. The fitness center will be facing The Square and the dance academy will be using the rear of the building and using the Jefferson Street entrance. They have made the building look very nice. (It's next door to Wilkes Eye Center.) . A new doctor has arrived in town. Dr. Nadine Halliburton has joined Dr. Mahesh Duggal and Dr. Lester Johnston at MedLink. Dr. Halliburton is board certified in family medicine and gynecology. A reception in her honor is planned for January 29. . Tom and Barbara Chase at Washington Plantation Bed & Breakfast on Lexington Avenue received a call about eight o'clock Friday night from Christy Warren and Scott Wilson of Cartersville. They wanted to know if they could be married at the Plantation on the very next Sunday and if the Plantation could provide a wedding cake and food for about 20 friends! It was very short notice, but Tom and Barbara agreed to do it. Barbara got busy and baked a wedding cake and they got together other refreshments and made other preparations. The couple came to Washington-Wilkes on Saturday and were guests at the Plantation. Other guests arrived Sunday and our Judge Jim Burton performed the wedding ceremony Sunday afternoon. . . . During the weekend, the Chases also received a call from Debra Houston and Freddie Miller of Tallahassee, Fla., who were married at the Plantation on Valentine's Day last year. They made a reservation to celebrate their first anniversary at the Plantation THIS Valentine's Day. . Wasn't that a welcomed storm we had about three o'clock Friday morning! There was a good bit of lightning and wind and it lasted about an hour. We can thank the storm for .925 inch (almost an inch) of good rain during that period. Since then we have had lots of fog and soaring temperatures. The forecast calls for a chance of sleet in the area Wednesday (January 16), and a chance of snow on Friday. My weather radio says lows in the 20s for the weekend and highs in the mid-40s. We oldtimers can't predict the weather any more. There are no tried and proven "signs" that we always could depend on for figuring what the weather was going to be. We just have to depend on the meteorologists, and that's no fun. . The Woman's Club is planning a "Comfort Food" supper at the clubhouse on January 25. Watch for details in The News-Reporter. . . . The annual John Duggan Scholarship Valentine Dinner will be on Monday, February 11. . . . The Wills Memorial Hospital Foundation is sponsoring a Valentine benefit, "From the Heart," February 2, at the Pope Convention Center. It's an optional black tie benefit for the hospital's Nash Library. . . . The whole month of February is loaded with special events. | |||||
