Tigers' streak continues with convincing 75-58 win over Greene County
On Saturday, January 12, the Tigers had no trouble at all with the Bulldogs of GMC as they cruised to an easy win 66-33. Four players scored in double figures and two of those had double-double performances. "We just kept playing smart basketball," reported Head Coach Don Keiser. "I just hope we can keep hitting those threes." Hitting double figures for Washington Wilkes were Dede Stewart leading the way with 19, Lucious Stewart with 18, Jarekus Bowman with 14 and Quincy Bradley with 10. The Stewarts, Dede and Lucious, also double-figured in rebounds with 11 and 10, respectively. Also impressive on the boards was Scotty Long with 10 rebounds and five blocked shots. The previous night, W-W travelled to Oglethorpe County to beat the Patriots 62-55. The seven-point margin was closer than it seemed. "It felt like we were blowing them away," Keiser said, "but they kept hitting threes (they hit seven of them) including two buzzer-beaters from half court." The win put the Tigers at 2-0 in the region, a good start in a race that could go in any direction. Lucious hit 21 points against Oglethorpe followed closely by Bowman with 16 and Long with 12. Dede was slightly down on scoring with seven points while turning in an impressive performance of 11 assists. Earlier in the week, the Tigers claimed their first region game beating Putnam's War Eagles 47-39. It was the first time Keiser took notice of his team's smart play. "For the last two games we have played some really smart basketball," he said. "We've been working our shots and we have done any really boneheaded things." Lucious double-doubled with 17 points and a dozen rebounds. He also logged seven assists. Long figured in at 10 points, eight boards, and four blocked shots.
The Tigers will spend the weekend on the road at Morgan County on Friday night and Lincoln County on Saturday before returning home to host N. Oconee next Tuesday.
