Sunday was a special day at Beaverdam Baptist Church. Members honored Rev. and Mrs. John McMillian who will be celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary January 30. They also welcomed Rev. and Mrs. Andy Perryman.

Rev. Andrew "Andy" Perryman, Director of Missions for the Georgia Baptist Association (GBA), brought a great message on "Words Through the Generations" from Revelation 2:1-7. Speaking on rekindling the flame of that first love for Jesus as our Savior, he spoke on three phases: the burning excitement of our first relationship with Jesus Christ as Savior; our growing burden for evangelism; and the realization of our eternal life with Christ.

Rev. and Mrs. McMillian, who have three children and six grandchildren, knew the church was planning a fellowship meal when the Perrymans visited but were surprised to findit was also in their honor. The Clifton Barrett Fellowship Hall was beautifully decorated by Elaine Mathews and Rosie Maxwell, members of the hospitality committee.

White cloths covered the tables with lighted candles globes and magnolia leaves placed at intervals down the long table. Long strands of gold beads connected these arrangements, which also had pairs of small white doves on the leaves. Other tables were similarly decorated. One was centered with a beautifully decorated three-tiered wedding cake with a bride and groom topper. Large wedding bells were toward the back on each end of the table. The cake was made by Mrs. Kenneth Byrd who is the daughter-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Byrd.

The McMillians also received a shower of anniversary cards, presented in a colorful gift bag. Everyone enjoyed an abundance of delicious food and beverages brought by members. The work of the hospitality committee is always appreciated. Other members assisting were Betty Byrd and Marie Maxwell; William Morrison who is always so helipful in so many ways, in addition to being musician and editor of the bulletin. Pictures were made for the church scrapbook kept by Betty Winfrey.

After a warm introduction by the pastor, Rev. Perryman introduced himself only as "a sinner saved by grace" and a "servant leader." Thanks is due Lauree Shelton, secretary, assistant clerk, assistant treasurer of the GBA, who aided in securing a bit more information about the new GBA Director of Missions who has been working among the churches of the Association since November 1, 2007, having come from the Mount Vernon Association of Baptist Churches where he also served as associational missionary.

A graduate of Screven County High School, he graduated from Georgia Southern College, Augusta College, and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Born July 21, 1946, he says his rebirth was July 13, 1956 -- a Friday the 13th -- when he felt the tug of the Holy Spirit and accepted Christ as Savior. He was ordained to the ministry on June 22, 1980.

He has also served as minister of music, as associate pastor, as camp pastor, and in 1991, led congregational singing for one session of the Georgia Baptist Convention. He also sang with the Sons of Jubal. He served in many capacities and had honors along the way, including being voted Johnson County's 1998 Man of the Year. He was also in the Air Force at 17.

He and Joni Peavy, also of Screven County, were married September 5, 1981. They have three children: Jason, Jennifer, and Jordan. Joni teaches the fourth grade at Johnson County Elementary School.

Asked about his hopes for the GBA, he said: "My prayer for the 47 churches in the Georgia Baptist Association is that we will become an Acts 1:8 association and cooperate together to do Kingdom work in the communities we serve, throughout the state, United States, and the whole world. I also continue to pray for revival in our churches." He also mentions that they are on the web at www.gaassn.org

Rev. McMillian and members of Beaverdam Baptist Church extend an invitation to all to attend services at Beaverdam where Sunday School begins at 10:15 each Sunday morning with worship services following at 11:00. A warm welcome awaits.
