Tignall News

Isn't it funny that any time the weather forecast calls for snow or sleet, everyone flocks to the grocery store to get milk and bread as if they aren't needed any other time. I was at the North Wilkes Library Saturday for children's story time, but no one showed up. I know that all the kids were home looking for the snow that didn't arrive. So next week all children from the ages of 3 to about 8 will enjoy hearing the story of Pinkalicious which is about a little girl who eats so many pink cupcakes that she turns pink. The other book is a new and funny version of Rapunzel called Falling for Rapunzel. If any adults would like to hear these two cute stories, just come on and join us next Saturday at 2:30. The library is fortunate to have received two new dictionaries and an atlas in the past week. .The Tignall community was saddened to hear of the death of Mrs. Marie Bradley last week. We extend sympathy to her family. Tignall Baptist Church will miss Miss Marie as she was their oldest member and a very faithful member who for many years sang in the choir. According to the records, at one time she had nine years and six months of perfect attendance for Sunday School. Miss Marie was always active in the senior adult ministry. Whenever the church van went on trips, she was always on the van. She was also known as the chewing gum lady from many of the children of the church. .The late Hugh Burton's children, Bobby Burton and Diane Self of Elberton, hosted a cousins' reunion Saturday, January 5, at Bobby Burton's cabin on Lake Russell. Those going for the reunion were Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Burton, Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Burton of Washington; Mr. and Mrs. Tony Hammond, Tony Burton, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Denard of Tignall; Lee Turner and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Self of Elberton. Bobby provided the barbecue and the other dishes were brought by the other families. Marion Hammond brought a chocolate pie by the recipe given to her from the late Harriet Burton. After the meal, Bobby and his brother-in-law, Jerry Self, provided music with Bobby on the guitar and Jerry on the keyboard and their singing was enjoyed by all. .Spending the week with Myrline Thornton was Alicia Thornton of Athens. Mary Jacobs of Monticello spent the weekend with Myrline. .Staying from Wednesday through Friday with Frankie and Gloria Ware was their grandson, 2 1/2 year-old Aubrey Flanigan, son of Mr. and Mrs. John David Flanigan of Lincolnton. I know Gloria was busy. .Speaking of busy . . . Congratulations to Bruce and Gretchen Lamar on having twin boys delivered Monday, January 14. I understand big brother Alex wasn't too taken with them at first, but has at least held one of them now. I know it's hard to understand they don't arrive knowing how to play with big brother. We extend sympathy to Louise Denard. Her first cousin, Elizabeth "Lib" Ruff of Winterville, passed away last week. Louise attended her service last Saturday.

On Friday, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh  Keener visited Hugh's uncle, James Vinson, at the Golden Living Center Windemere in Augusta. .We are sorry to hear that Frances Vinson is in the hospital with pneumonia. Let's keep her in our prayers.

Spending the weekend with Gertrude Long were Bobby and Nancy Smith and their three sons, all from Rocky Point, N.C.

Members of Tignall Baptist Church enjoyed the special musicSunday presented by Karen Saggus. She sang No Matter How Far. She has a beautiful voice.

Baptist Men's Day will be held next Sunday at the Tignall Baptist Church. The men will be preparing breakfast for everyone who signs up. Breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m. The guest speaker for the morning worship hour will be Rev. Andy Perryman, the Director of Missions.

The North Wilkes Steering Committee meeting was cancelled last week. The meeting will be this Thursday, January 24, at 6:30 at the school lunchroom. It seems that every time this group of people gets together for a meeting there is a storm. They are thinking of changing their title to the North Wilkes Stormy Group.

Wilkes County Baptist Church had a New Members Luncheon Sunday. Rev. Gene Winfrey of Lawrenceville brought the morning message.

J.T. Mack, son of John and Katie Mack, celebrated his eighth birthday at the Pizza Hut on Sunday with many of his friends.

Beulah Baptist Church will be having as a fund raiser for the Family Life Center, a steak supper on Saturday, February 9, at the church. Steak and all the trimmings will be served starting at 5:00. Adult plates are $15 and a child's plate will be $7.50. Call to reserve a steak plate by February 3. For reservations, call Edna Rhodes at 285-2519 or Sharon Bailey at 359-2214.
