Dr. Lind to speak at hospital next Thursday Dr. D. Scott Lind will be the featured speaker at the Wills Memorial Hospital Lunch and Learn on Thursday, February 21, at 12 noon in the hospital library. Dr. Lind is Professor and Chief of Surgical Oncology within the Department at the Medical College of Georgia and will speak on gallbladder disease. Gallbladder disease is a common condition that affects mainly women, although men can suffer too. The symptoms vary widely from discomfort to severe pain which begins mainly after eating. In severe cases, the patient can suffer from jaundice, nausea, and fever. The most common reason for gallbladder disease is gallstones. Gallstones are solid stones found in the gallbladder from cholesterol, bile salts, and calcium. They are formed when bile contains too much cholesterol. This excess forms crystals from which gallstones are made. The possibility of developing gallstones increases with age. The following groups are considered to be at increased risk: people who have relatives with gallstones; obese people; and people with high blood cholesterol level. Dr. Lind grew up in Rochester, Minnesota, and graduated from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 1984. His internship in General Surgery was served at the University of Texas in San Antonio, Texas, in 1989. He then traveled back to the Medical College of Virginia to serve his Fellowship in 1992. Dr. Lind began his practice at the Medical College of Georgia in March 2002. Dr. Lind lives in Augusta with his wife, the former Barbara Kaplan, and their three children, Jason, Joanna, and Jenny.
