Tigers win sub-region; players, coach honored
On the heels of the victory came the announcement that senior Lucious Stewart had been named Sub-region Player of the Year and Head Coach Don Keiser was named Coach of the Year. Accolades also went to Jarekus Bowman who was named to the second team selection. The Tigers last two wins guaranteed them a berth in the state playoffs which will begin February 22. This season marks the seventh time Keiser has taken his team to the state playoffs in just eight years as head coach. The next game for the Tigers will be Friday, February 15, but the opponent is as yet unknown. As the No. 1 seed from 8A-AA, W-W gets a bye while the other teams battle through four games to determine who that might be. It's a bit complicated but here's how it shakes out: On Monday, Morgan and Oglethorpe played each other while Greene and Putnam played each other. The winners of those two games (unknown as of this writing) played each other on Tuesday. That winner then faces Dawson County (No. 2 from the other sub-region) and the winner of that game will play the W-W Tigers tomorrow, February 15, at Putnam County beginning at 8:30 p.m. While all that is happening, the same sort of thing is going on in sub-region 8B-AA with North Oconee (No. 2 from this subregion) crossing over. Fannin County is No. 1 in 8B-AA. The four teams playing on Friday will battle for seedings in the state playoffs. There will be two games on Friday and two games on Saturday. A Tiger win on Friday would secure a home playoff game in the first round of the playoffs on February 22. The win over North Oconee didn't start out so well for the Tigers. Having been down by as much as 13 points in the first half, Deandre Stewart his a couple of 3s early in the second quarter and the gap began to close. By halftime, W-W was down by only five, 24-29. To start the second half, Scotty Long hit a couple of quick shots which got the momentum going and the Tigers took the lead. From that point, Keiser said they never looked back and the payoff was sweet. Lucious Stewart scored a triple-double for the game with 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. Deandre Stewart pumped in 14 points and Jarekus Bowman hit an even dozen.
"Jarekus played a great defensive game," Keiser said. "He shut down their leading scorer especially in the second half."
