Saturday program offers homebuying assistance

A second free educational workshop for people who want to buy a home but don't know where to start is set for Saturday, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at The Pope Center on Lexington Avenue.

"Attend this free workshop," said Barbara Bacon, "and walk away with important information that can help you and your family reach your goal of homeownership and help you learn how to clean up your credit problems."

The City of Washington, along with East Athens Development Corporation and the Minority Development Corporation, is sponsoring the program to help take the confusion and uncertainty out of the homebuying process and provide a stepby step guide to home ownership.

Saturday's program is designed to help people understand the process involved in becoming homeowners. Topics will include cleaning up credit, learning about money management, setting financial goals, avoiding consumer scams, understanding the mortgage loan process, and learning how to qualify for down-payment assistance.

The program to educate residents on the path to homeownership is part of the Southwest Washington Redevelopment Plan, which has as one of its aims to increase the ownership of private homes in the Whitehall area.

Refreshments will be served, and there will be free give-aways, Bacon said.
