Students encouraged to access www.georgiaoas.org In an effort to promote academics and test scores, Washington-Wilkes Middle School is encouraging students to access the Georgia Department of Education's (GaDOE) website www. georgiaoas.org. The OAS website is an Online Assessment System for students in primary, elementary, middle, and high school grades from K-12. The OAS enables students in Georgia's public schools to access tests that consist of the same kinds of questions that appear on the state's assessments in Reading, English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies in the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT), the End of Course Tests (EOCT), and the Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GHSGT). The online testing is an easy process. Once students log onto the website and take the test, OAS will provide immediate feedback. This feedback is vital in helping students and parents to know what areas the student may need extra practice in. The OAS is available throughout the school year so that teachers can integrate testing on CRCT, EOCT, and GHSGT with their teaching of those subjects. The system is also available to students outside the classroom for use anywhere they have an Internet connection, such as after school and on weekends. Students were given logon ID numbers along with passwords which allow them to access the OAS website and complete sample questions. If students have lost their logon numbers, parents may contact their homeroom teacher for the number. Middle School students recently used the Online Assessment System to conduct benchmark testing within the school system. Benchmark testing enables teachers to see how students are retaining material taught to this point and further pinpoint areas that students are not mastering. Through the OAS testing, teachers gain valuable knowledge that allows them to gear their instruction towards concepts not yet mastered.
During grade level meetings administrators shared the results of the online assessment testing with groups of teachers. All teachers and administrators were in agreement that the online assessment was successful in offering valuable information to be used throughout the remainder of the school year. Georgia Online Assessment is a valuable tool for students both at school and at home. Parents are encouraged to take advantage of this service at home, local library, or anywhere an internet service is provided.
