Wills Memorial fortunate to enjoy partnership with MCG As a Medicare designated "Critical Access Hospital," Wills Memorial November 9, 2006 Hospital has enjoyed a formal partnership with MCG Health since 2002. This strong and growing relationship has benefitedthe Washington-Wilkes community, our local physicians, and the patients we serve in many ways. One of the most significantof these benefits is our access to world-class specialty physicians. Wills Memorial Hospital began its Specialty Center about two years ago with MCG support. The "Center" is a collection of outpatient clinics staffed largely by senior MCG faculty physicians. These physicians currently include a department chairman and other senior faculty members, two of whom were recently named among the top doctors in their specialties in the country, Dr. Bruce MacFadyen (general surgery) and Dr. David Lind (general and cancer surgery). Another MCG physician who regularly sees patients at Wilkes Eye Center, Dr Julian Nussbaum, was also recognized as one of the country's top doctors in his field of ophthalmology. Also named to the list was Dr. David Hess, a neurologist who was instrumental in establishing the REACH Program, a telemedicine program for the rapid treatment of stroke patients in rural hospitals. This program gives us aroundthe clock access to neurological specialists. Several Wilkes County residents have quite literally had their lives saved by this program.
Doctors MacFadyen, Lind, Nussbaum, and Hess, along with thirteen of their colleagues at MCG, were recently recognized as "Top Doctors in America" and will be honored by a reception in Augusta on February 27. This occasion serves as an opportunity for us to recognize the value of our close working relationship with MCG Health and to remind our community that you do not have to leave town for Augusta specialists. In growing numbers they come to us.
