Confederate sub Hunley is topic of Feb. 25 Round Table meeting Jack Marlar will present a program on the Confederate submarine, the CSS H.L.Hunley, at the Washington Civil War Round Table meeting on Monday evening, February 25 at 6 p.m. at The Jockey Club Restaurant on The Square. Claibourne Darden, Round Table President, says that the public is invited and welcomed. The cost of the meeting is $10 per person and includes a very nice dinner. Please make reservations by e-mail at claibourne@ darden-atlanta.net or by calling 404-210-5811 and leaving a message. The Confederate submarine, the CSS Hunley, was the first submarine to ever sink an enemy war ship, Darden said. "During her trial runs, the CSS Hunley had sunk several times, taking the lives of at least 32 crewmen. Yet another crew immediately volunteered." On the night of February 19, 1864, this new crew slipped the CSS Hunley out of Charleston harbor bearing toward the USS Housatonic, which was on blockade duty outside the harbor. At approximately 9:00 p.m., the CSS Hunley rammed her spar torpedo into the stern of the USS Housatonic. The entire stern of the USS Housatonic disintegrated. Unfortunately, the CSS Hunley never made to back home.
Only recently have the remains of the CSS Hunley been found and brought up. They are currently under restoration in Charleston, Darden said. "Mr. Marlar has some significantnew information on the CSS Hunley that he will reveal during his presentation."
