Area Junior Steer and Heifer Show to showcase efforts of local youth

Wilkes County exhibitors like young Jackson Armour (center) will be showing their prize steers and heifers at Saturday's 54th Annual Washington Area Steer and Heifer Show.
Eight Wilkes County students will be participating, along with students from Lincoln, Oglethorpe, and Madison counties in the 54th Annual Washington Area Junior Steer and Heifer Show Saturday at the McGill-Woodruff Agricultural Center, Washington.

The Wilkes County students are previous Grand and Reserve shower Ethan Armour, Jackson Armour, Greg Callaway, William Garrard, Dalton Howard, Tommy Howard, Sheena Kopecky, and Gabe Strother.

An additional 23 exhibitors are also expected from Lincoln, Madison, and Oglethorpe counties.

Check-in time for all steers and heifers entering this year's show is from 10 a.m. until 12 noon, Friday, with the steer and heifer banquet to be held at the ag center that night beginning at 7 p.m.

Tickets for the banquet are $5 for students and $10 for adults, with showmen admitted free.

Judge for the event will be Jary Douglas of Athens.

The livestock show will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday morning and includes events such as the heifer show; twelfth grade showmanship (steer and heifer); tenth and eleventh grade showmanship (steer and heifer); eighth and ninth grade showmanship

steer and heifer); fourth through seventh grade showmanship (steer and heifer); the steer show; County Group of Five; and Breeder's Special.

Rev. Dale Fincher, pastor of the Tignall Baptist Church, will serve as the chaplain for the event.

The show will conclude with the annual steer sale at 2 p.m. Rayle EMC will buy the Grand Champion and Farmer & Merchants Bank will buy the Reserve Champion.

Kennedy, Tommy Howard, Wilkes Barnett Contracting, Pollard Lumber Co., Publix Supermarkets, Southern Line Services, Mattison and Associates, Reed Ice, H&H Industrial, Billy and Joanne Collins, Brian Callaway, Joe Burton, Ashmore Logging, Andrews Quick Lube, and Wilkes County Veterinary Services.
