Visitor inspired by weekend in Washington TO THE EDITOR: I am writing this letter having just returned from the Winter Conference of GABEO in Washington- Wilkes. This is my first day back in town and I have spent all morning in an attempt to convey to my colleagues just how inspiring and influential the past weekend has been for me. As I recount the remarkable events that have taken place, everyone hearing my stories is absolutely astounded by my experiences at the GABEO Conference. Rep. Tyrone Brooks provided an outstanding agenda regarding our young people in Georgia. The speakers were extraordinary in their presentations. This past weekend was my first time visiting the city of Washington, Ga. I stayed at the Southern Elegance Bed and Breakfast which was very nice and cozy. It was surreal to visit the Pope Center where the conference was held. Mayor Willie Burns, his wife and other officials, were gracious hosts and really rolled out the red carpet for the many elected officials who came from across the state of Georgia. The Pope Center offered us so many amenities. The City of Washington should be very proud of this fantastic building. I was extremely humbled by the courteous people in your town, and yet I was most impressed by how down-to-earth and genuine they all were. It seems that Mayor Burns is a very talented man who has accomplished some major things in your city. My experience at this conference was most inspiring not because of the hospitality, but because I was encouraged to pursue some of the projects that your mayor has so courageously taken on. We culminated our session with an uplifting worship service at Springfield Missionary Baptist Church where Rev. Norman Williams pastored. The sermon, choir, and repass were all superb.
This will not be my last trip to Washington, Ga., and I am definitely going to let everyone in my community know of my experience there.
