The W-WMS/W-WCHS media center has a new online catalog called Destiny. Destiny, a product of Follett Software Company, is among the most popular library catalog management programs in the field. Since the conversion last fall, media specialists from each school have been training students and faculty members how to search using Destiny.

Destiny is web-based, which means that it can be accessed from anywhere there is an Internet connection. This is especially helpful for students who are working at home or the public library to locate materials to check-out from their media center the following school day.

In addition to cataloging all books and materials within the media center, Destiny catalogs schoolappropriate web sites. The web sites are listed categorically with the related books and materials. This is especially helpful for students and teachers, as it eliminates the need to do a broad-based Internet search (i.e. Google) in the hopes of finding educationally-sound web sites. The web sites result listing provides a brief summary of each site and the grade-levels for which the sites are most appropriate.

Teachers have been given a username and password which allows them to search Destiny for materials and web sites according to the Georgia Performance Standards. This feature is very helpful for teachers in locating the best print and non-print materials for students to use during a unit of study.

How can you check-out Destiny for yourself? Visit the school's respective web site and click on the Destiny link. The WWMSWWCHS media center web site, http://www.wilkes.k12.ga.us/ WWHS/mediacenter.htm, has two links to Destiny depending upon whether you are searching from school or an off-campus location. Students do not currently have a log-in and can simply cancel this window, if prompted, and begin searching by title, author, keyword, subject or series. Destiny was acquired system-wide, so students and teachers can search their respective school's catalog or any school within the system.
