Wilkes Co. 4-H Dairy Show Team starts great show season
The 2008 Dairy Show Team consists of six members this year. They are all returning members who have tremendous experience and great talents for caring and showing these heifers. Returning to compete this year are Lauren Chafin, Marlyse Sifre, Marisa Sifre, Morgen Swann, Megan Thackston, and William Thomas. These individuals have competed in many shows this season taking the lead above all the rest. To start off their season, these 4-H'ers competed in the Elbert County Show. Placings were right on target with Morgen Swann winning first and ninth in weight classes, Lauren Chafin with third in showmanship and fourth in weight class, Megan Thackston placing fifth in weight class, and William Thomas placing sixth in weight class. While making an incredible start at Elbert County, they proceeded on to Putnum County where they competed in the Second Annual Briarpatch Classic Show. At this show 4-H'ers placings were better than ever with all members placing in the top ten. Lauren Chafin started the team off with a first in showmanship, Marisa Sifre and Lauren Chafin placed second in weight classes, followed by Megan Thackston placing fourth, William Thomas placing fifth, Morgen Swann placing both his calves in sixth place, and Marlyse Sifre placing seventh. These 4-H'ers had hit their winning streak and decided to come back home to show off in front of their home crowd at the Rayle EMC Dairy Show. This local show allowed 4-H'ers to show their talents and skills which helped them take the cake. Winning first place in their showmanship classes were William Thomas and Lauren Chafin.Placing second in her showmanship class was Megan Thackston, Morgen Swann placed fourth along with Marisa Sifre placing fifth and Marlyse Sifre placing sixth in showmanship classes. When it came to weight classes Wilkes County placed in the top of every class. Lauren Chafin started them off taking first place, placing second were Marisa Sifre and Morgen Swann, followed by William Thomas winning third, Morgen Swann placing 4th with his second heifer, Megan Thackston placing sixth, and Marlyse Sifre placing seventh. Wilkes County 4-H topped off a night of fame with Lauren Chafin winning Reserve Champion overall.
As if all this excitement was not enough, the show team traveled to Athens to compete at the 11th Annual UGA Dairy Heifer Show. The stakes at this show was very competitive. Our 4-H'ers worked exceptionally hard to compete with many counties all over the state. The show team is very dedicated and placed with pride at this show. Placings were Lauren Chafin with third in showmanship and eighth in weight class, William Thomas with fourth in showmanship and sixth in weight class, Marisa Sifre receiving honorable mention in showmanship and fifth in weight class, Marlyse Sifre receiving honorable mention in showmanship and 12th in weight class, Megan Thackston placing both seventh in showmanship and weight classes, followed by Morgen Swann receiving honorable mention in showmanship and eighth and 12th place in weight classes.
