Tigers open with strong win over Elbert; Thomson is next

HUNTER JACKSON LED OFF THE THIRD WITH A SINGLE He was 2-for-3 against Elbert County on Monday.
The W-W Tigers opened their baseball season with a powerful comeback after a shaky start against the Blue Devils of Elbert County on Monday. After struggling through a disastrous first inning, W-W chipped away at an 0-6 deficit before finally emerging as the 13-9 victor in 2008's first diamond contest.

Elbert's 6-0 spot came off two Tiger errors which spawned three unearned runs in the top of the first. But in the bottom of the frame, senior Caleb Saggus led off with a walk and promptly stole his way to second base. He moved to third on a Ty McGill grounder and then Drew Wilson drew the second bb of the inning. Jerrick Darracott singled to left and scored Saggus. Right after that D.J. Barnett doubled to left, scoring Wilson. Thus began the comeback.

After Kelly Roberts held Elbert scoreless in the second Hunter Jackson and McGill led off with singles and Darracott walked to load the bases. Barnett singled, knocking in two more runs, then Roberts smacked an rbi-single to score Darracott. The Tigers had closed the gap to 5-6.

In the bottom of the third Lee Thompson reached on an error by the shortstop and advanced to second on a wild throw. Saggus singled to right field to score Thompson, tying the game at 6-6.

The Tigers big inning came in the fourth when Darracott, Barnett, and pinch hitter Zach Murray singled to scored Darracott. Thompson reached first on a misplayed bunt to load the bases. Whit Chafin scored Barnett on a sac flyto center, then a single from Jackson scored Murray. Saggus finished with the final rbi of the inning with a single up the middle to score Jackson.

The Tigers' insurance runs came in the sixth with a leadoff double from Darracott. Barnett was hit by a pitch and Murray singled to left to load the bases for the Tigers. Thompson scored an rbi from a ground ball to second and Jackson belted a sac flyto center.

Elbert provided a little thrill to the action with a pair of homers late in the game but could manage no more.

Roberts picked up his first win going four innings. Barnett pitched the final three innings striking out four batters. Leading hitters for the Tigers were Saggus, 3-5; Mcgill 2-5; Darracott 4-5; Barnett 3-5; Roberts 1-2; Murray 2-3; and Jackson 2-3.

The Tigers hosted Lincoln County on Wednesday but results were not known at the time of this printing. On Saturday, March 1, W-W will host Thomson beginning at noon. After that, it will be March 12 before the Tigers return home again.
