Tigers fight to the end but fall short in first round of state AA playoffs

DEANDRE STEWART (left photo) AND JAREKUS BOWMAN EACH HAD 13 POINTS The Tigers came up just short in the first round of the state playoffs last Friday.
A disappointing loss marked the end of a satisfying season as the W-W Tiger boys basketball team fell 56-58 in the final seconds to a strong Pace Academy team in the W-WES gym last Friday night.

It was a roller coaster game for the Tigers who led off with a quick 5-0 lead with just seconds off the clock. But a cool second quarter took its toll and the boys had a lot of ground to make up being down by as much as 14 points in the third quarter. But they fought back.

"I was so proud of them - they fought to the end," Tiger Head Coach Don Keiser said. "It was a hard defeat for them." Keiser also reported that the Pace player that had been so much trouble hitting five3s in the first half was held to only two in the second half. One of those however, was the killing blow.

With 18 seconds left on the clock, the Tigers were up by a point when that shot fell. Pace went up by two. The Tigers had the ball out with 6.9 seconds left but without enough time to design a play. The game's final shot missed its mark and Pace advanced to round two.

"They did a great job on defense to stop us," Keiser said pointing to another game of fairly balanced scoring among the Tigers. Lucious Stewart led the way with 17 points, followed by Jarekus Bowman and Deandre Stewart with 13 each. Scotty long rounded it out with 11 points of his own.

And as proud as he was of his players, Keiser was equally as proud of the support his team enjoyed.

"Our fan support was just incredible," he said. "It was the best support we've had a home in a long time and every school was well-represented." He also issued a special thanks to the faculty and staff of Washington- Wilkes Elementary School "for the signs and everything."

"And thanks to all the fans too," he said.
