Tigers beat Putman in extra innings for first region win as season heats up

Lee Thompson takes a cut for the Tigers W-W beat Putnam in region competition last week and faces two more opponents this week.
The Washington-Wilkes Tigers got the region baseball schedule off to the right start by beating the Putnam County Eagles 4-2 on Monday. The win didn't come to easy as the two rivals went into extra innings in the first 8AA encounter of the 2008 season.

Kelley Roberts pitched fiveinnings for the no-decision allowing two runs on just two hits. D.J. Barnett picked up the win in relief pitching four scoreless innings while striking out seven Putnam batters.

The first W-W rally came in the seventh inning when the Tigers were trailing 2-1. Whit Chafin started off the inning with single to right field. After moving to third on a couple of wild pitches, Chafin scored to tie the game on a misplayed popup off the bat of Hunter Jackson.

In the top of the ninth Jackson led off the inning with a walk and was followed by Caleb Saggus who was hit by a pitch. Graham Wolfe then scored on a ground ball error by the second baseman to put the Tigers up 3-2. Drew Wilson then hit a sac flyto center to score Saggus and give the Tigers a two-run lead.

D.J. BARNETT LOGGED SEVEN Ks TO GET THE WIN The game with Putnam went nine innings last Friday.
Putnam was able to put two runners on base with a single and bb but Barnett struck out two of the final three batters.

Scheduled games against Lincoln County and Thomson were both rained out last week.

The Tigers hosted Morgan yesterday, March 12, but results were not available in time for this issue. On Friday, March 14, the team will travel to Greene County for another region contest. The rainout game against Thomson will be at Thomson this Saturday, March 15, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
