Baseball team keeps winning and students keep achieving

This past week, the Washington-Wilkes Middle School baseball team played three home games. On Tuesday, they played against Putnam County. They won by the score of 5-1. On Saturday, March 15, the team played Wilkinson County in a double header. They won both games by scores of 11-1 in the first game and 8-0 in the second game. For the season, they are 4-1. However, they've won all of their region games. Way to go Tigers! They will play again on March 18 against Hancock County in Hancock at 4:30.

On Saturday, March 8, Hannah McTier, an eighth grader at W-WMS, participated in the Region Spelling Bee at the Morris Auditorium in the Augusta Chronicle building in Augusta, Georgia. She was accompanied by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Troy McTier and assistant principal, Deleki Lee. Congratulations to Hannah for representing her school in the competition.

On Friday, March 14, the Kiwanis Club held a Talent Show in the high school cafeteria. Many middle school students placed in the talent and art competitions. In the art competition for sixth-eighth graders, eighth grader Jordan Echols won first place, seventh grader Paige McAvoy won second place, and Whitney Branham won third place. In the Talent Show for sixtheighth graders, sixth grader Leslie Souther won first place, eighth grader Jordan Echols won second place, and third place was a tie between sixth grader Jesse Echols and seventh grader Kelsey Brooke. Congratulations students!

Two middle school students, Trevor Curry, son of Lynn Luckey, and Dennis King, Jr., son of Latisa F. King and Dennis King, are currently participating in the Cadet Program, which is taught by the McDuffie County Fire Department. The leader of the cadets is Lieutenant James Lewis. Both students are currently in the eighth grade at Washington-Wilkes Middle School. The purpose of this program is to teach future firefighters the fundamentals and skills required to become a professional firefighter in the future. The cadets meet each week at the firestation in Thomson. They get to respond to specific calls and have certain duties that they perform during an accident. The ages range for 15 to 18 years old. The program has been in place for the past three years. About 20 active cadets are now enrolled in the program from Wilkes and McDuffie Counties. On Thursday, March 13, two W-WMS students, Tyrin Fanning and Katie Trimm traveled to Atlanta where State Commissioner of Agriculture, Tommy Irvin, recognized them for their art entries in the annual art/essay contest sponsored by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. The celebration began with breakfast at the Agriculture Building, and the procession proceeded to the state capitol for proclamation signing by Governor Sonny Perdue.

Tyrin Fanning placed third in the statewide contest and received a certificate and a monetary gift of $50; Katie Trimm received an Honorable Mention for her entry. Tyrin was accompanied to the event by his parents, Rev. and Mrs. David Fanning, Dekeena and Kennedy Cray, and Herman Simpson. Katie was accompanied by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Trimm. Congratulations to each of these students.
