Board members recognized during week of appreciation

Wilkes County Board of Education members are (l-r) Chairman Ricky Callaway, Kay Finnell, Bob Guin, Kelly Powell, and Steve Albertson.
The Wilkes County School System is joining in a statewide celebration this week to salute the efforts of local school board members. The week of March 17-21, 2008, has been proclaimed School Board Appreciation Week in Georgia. The week-long observance calls attention to the contributions of local boards of education.

"Citizens elect board members to represent the community's voice on education matters and to set the vision for the school district," said Superintendent Joyce Williams. "Our board spends countless hours fulfilling its responsibilities and working together to continually set and clarify the mission, vision and goals of our education system."

Listed below are the members of our board and their years of dedicated service to our school system: Mr. Ricky Callaway, 13 years, elected chairman in 1998; Kay Finnell represents District 1, fiveyears, served as vice chairman in 2003; Bob Guin represents District 2, fiveyears, vice chairman; Kelly Powell represents District 3, four years; Steve Albertson represents District 4, three years.

As constitutional officers of Georgia, school board members are responsible for setting educational policies, employing school personnel, providing buildings and equipment, operating a transportation system, and overseeing the disbursement of school funds. As community leaders, school board members serve as advocates for the children in local public schools and must study, evaluate, and decide what actions are in the best interest of those students.

"As the men and women citizens elect to represent them in education matters, local school boards represent a continuing commitment to local citizen control and decision making in education," Williams said.

The Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) sponsors School Boards Appreciation Week. The mission of GSBA is to ensure excellence in the governance of local school systems by providing leadership, advocacy, and service to the 180 elected school boards across the state.
