Book Review
Maximum Ride By JAMES PATTERSON
Reviewed by PEGGY BARNETT
If you are a fan of the suspense novels by James Patterson (and who is not?) you might want to pause here. It turns out that Patterson also writes young-adult fiction. The term "young adult" is not well-defined,and this reviewer definitely, though an adult, cannot be designated "young." She is, however, enamored of books for the young.

The subtitle of Maximum Rule is "Saving the world and other extreme sports." Patterson does not leave his suspense-building ability behind when he turns to other kinds of fiction. This book follows Maximum Ride: School's Out -- Forever. These are fantasy/science books. Prepare to suspend disbelief.

Max, Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gazzy, and Angel are children who have been experimented on by mad scientists. They call themselves the "Flock," an apt name, since their experiment has involved giving them wings. They have escaped from the Bad Guys, and led by Max, plan to save the world. Saving the world is never easy.

They are accompanied by Total, Angel's talking dog, who provides much of the humor. He is very tough, as are the bird children. They need to be tough, pursued by wolf people, called Erasers by the children. When they realize (helped by Max's mysterious Voice) that no more Erasers are coming, the bad news is that now there are robot- Erasers, harder to overcome.

Fang has acquired a laptop computer and has developed a blog, calling the world's children to unite to fight the enemy. Max has been told that she is to save the world herself and doesn't think she needs aid from anyone besides the flock. She and Fang are teenaged, but the other are younger and she needs to protect them.

More trouble arises when they are separated, but the worst happens when they are recaptured and are about to be "retired" as a failed experiment. In addition, Fang becomes jealous and angry when Max befriends an old enemy, Art, who helps them escape yet again. Do not despair, just when all seems hopeless, the children of the world do arise.

If you're brave enough, you can read Maximum Ride: Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports at the Mary Willis Library.
