Sleep apnea to be subject of Tea and Learn

Wills Memorial Hospital will host a Tea and Learn March 27, 2:30 p.m., in the hospital cafe. The topic to be discussed is "sleep apnea" and will be presented by Dr. Nadine Halliburton-Foster who is associated with MedLink.

The Greek word "apnea" literally means "without breath." There are three types of apnea: obstructive, central and mixed. Of the three, obstructive is the most common. People with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times and often for a minute or longer.

Sleep apnea is very common and affects more than 23 million Americans. Risk factors include being male, overweight, and over the age of 40.

Untreated sleep apnea can cause high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases, memory problems, weight gain, impotency, and headaches. Moreover, untreated sleep apnea may be responsible for job impairment and motor vehicle crashes. Fortunately, sleep apnea can be diagnosed and treated.

Dr. Halliburton-Foster is board certified in family medicine, with extensive experience in obstetrics. She came to Washington after three years with Michael Watson Rural Health Center in Bamberg, S.C.

A native of Montego Bay, Jamaica, the doctor is a graduate of Northern Caribbean University and Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica, West Indies. She graduated from high school at age 15, had her bachelors by 19, graduated from medical school at the age of 23, and was in private medicine by age 26.
