THE ACADEMIC CORNER Advanced Placement Courses have become an integral part of the curriculum at Washington- Wilkes High School. Advanced Placement classes are academically challenging courses that give students analytical perspectives in a variety of disciplines. Through AP Exams, students have the opportunity to earn credit or advanced standing at most of the nation's colleges and universities. At WWCHS we offer 4 Advanced Placement Classes: AP Calculus AB, AP Government and Politics, AP Macroeconomics and AP Microeconomics. Participation in the Advanced Placement Program allows our students to gain an edge in preparation for college. By showing a commitment to rigorous course work they will stand out in the college admissions process. The Wilkes County school system is committed to the principle that all students deserve an opportunity to participate in rigorous and academically challenging courses and programs. In concert with the Georgia Dept. of Education we believe: l All students who are willing to accept the challenge of a rigorous academic curriculum should be considered for admission to AP courses. l Barriers that restrict access to AP courses should be eliminated for students from ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in the AP Program. l Schools should make every effort to ensure that their AP classes reflectthe diversity of their student population.
These programs are important tools for closing Washington- Wilkes' achievement gap. Recently Washington-Wilkes High School was named a Georgia Advanced Placement Access and Support School by Kathy Cox, State Superintendent of Schools. This designation is given to Georgia public schools where at least 30 percent of the AP test takers are African-American or Hispanic and at least 30 percent of all AP exams received a score of 3 or higher.
