Tickets may be purchased at the door the evening of the performances for $12. "It's going very well," choral director Jeanie Joesbury said of rehearsals, which began in early January. "This musical is going to showcase our talents well." Set in 1905 in pre-revolutionary Russia, Fiddler on the Roof is the story of a Jewish dairyman (junior Ben Raburn) who tries to maintain family and religious traditions despite a rapidly changing world. He must cope with the edict of the Tsar, who evicts the Jews from their village, and with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters whose choices of a husband move progressively further away from traditional Jewish customs. Despite the fact that the musical deals with such serious topics as persecution, poverty and the struggle to hold onto one's beliefs, the comedic moments and the excellent music made Fiddler on the Roof the longest running production in the history of Broadway for many years. "If I Were a Rich Man" and "Sunrise, Sunset" are two of the well-known musical numbers in the production. Washington students with major roles include senior Brittany Ray as Hodel, the Fiddler's daughter; Chase Walker as Lazar Wolf, the butcher; and Adam Hardy as Fyedka, a gentile. Other Wilkes students in the production include Emily Henderson, Anna Goolsby, Lizzie Keen, Sherrer Long, Brandy Ray, Ben Danner, Marla Goolsby, Kayley Roberson, Eli Holder, and Jarrett Keen. Miriam Hahn, a Briarwood graduate and former chorus member, is serving as stage director and directing all of the principal scenes for the production, according to Joesbury, who will be playing the piano for the musical. While at Briarwood, Hahn had leading roles in several productions.
With a degree in English and Theatre, the recent Wofford College graduate is "adding a new dimension to the drama aspect of our production. I'm very pleased to welcome her back to Briarwood," Joesbury said.
