Tigers rebound with two wins, continue region play this week

DREW WILSON GOT HIS FIRST HOME RUN OF THE SEASON It came during the 13-run fifth against Oglethorpe County.
After the Region 8AA bobble to North Oconee last week, the Washington-Wilkes Tiger baseball team has bounced back with strong and impressive wins over two region opponents. The Oglethorpe County Patriots, usually a force to be reckoned with, proved to be no contest last Thursday. Then, on Monday, the hapless Eagles of Putnam County had to call it a day after the Tigers demolished them in fiveinnings.

The wins leave the Tigers at 7-3 overall and a strong 5-1 in 8AA.

North Oconee remains undefeated in region play but the Tigers are solidly in second place having beaten everybody in the region except the Titans. This week, W-W traveled to Morgan County on Wednesday (results unavailable by press time) and will host Greene County on Friday before traveling to Oconee for a chance at revenge next Tuesday, April 1.

On Monday, March 24, the Tigers beat Putnam 13-3 in six innings. Drew Wilson picked up his first win of the year pitching fiveinnings and allowing only two runs while striking out nine batters. D.J. Barnett pitched the sixth allowing one run while striking out two.

D.J. BARNETT CAME ON IN RELIEF He struck out two en route to the Tigers' win over Putnam.
The Tigers scored nine runs in the sixth inning to stop the game because of the mercy rule.

Leading hitters for the Tigers were Caleb Saggus 1-2, Drew Wilson 1-3, Jerrick Darracott 1-4, Whit Chafin 1-3, Ty McGill 1-3, and Spencer Swinson 2-3.

On Thursday, March 20, the Tigers went to Lexington and beat Oglethorpe's Patriots by the score of 16-6. Kelley Roberts pitched a complete game (six innings) to pick up his third win of the year.

The Tigers big inning came in the fifth when they scored 13 runs on nine hits. It was also in that inning that Wilson hit his first home run of the year.

Leading hitters for the Tigers were Caleb Saggus 4-4, 2b, 5 runs 6sb; Drew Wilson 2-4, hr, 6rbi; D.J. Barnett 2-4; Zach Murray 1-2; and Whit Chafin 2-3.
