One teen suffers gunshot, another 15-year-old in jail from playing with handgun

One 15-year-old Washington youth is recovering from a gunshot wound and another 15-year-old is behind bars, charged with shooting his friend while playing with a pistol last week.

Washington Police Lt. J.D. Nelson said that the two juveniles were playing with a .22 caliber revolver that one of the youths had bought some time before. "This was not one of the guns stolen from Kettle Creek," Nelson said. "This kid bought it for $45 from a local drug dealer, and he's in a lot of trouble, too."

Nelson said that the shooter was showing off the revolver, and thinking he had put the safety on, pulled the trigger. The other youth, standing in front of him, was shot in the stomach.

The injured youth tried to put ice on the bullet wound, Nelson said, while the shooter panicked and called 911, Nelson said, then hung up, then called back again.

When police arrived, the two came up with a story that they had been in the woods and somebody shot at them, the investigator said. "After a while, they broke down and admitted the truth," he said.

The injured youth was treated by Wilkes EMS and taken by LifeFlight to Medical College of Georgia, where, after surgery, he was listed in stable condition.

The shooter was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a firearm and underage possession of a firearm. He is currently at the Regional Youth Detention Center in Augusta.

The shooter is also under investigation for incidents reported of him allegedly brandishing the weapon and firing it while driving through the Baltimore area. "We're still investigating these other incidents," Nelson said. "There could be more charges."

Larry Wingfield, the man who allegedly sold the weapon to the teenager, is facing more serious charges, Nelson said, including contributing to the delinquency of a minor and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. "He may even be charged with cruelty to children in the first degree," Nelson said. "Selling a gun to a kid - there's no call for that."
