Local Tour de Georgia volunteers needed; volunteer orientation, training set April 17
The mandatory volunteer orientation is set for Thursday, April 17, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the County Commission boardroom at the Wilkes County courthouse. And there is still a need for more volunteers for the day. "We will be going over everything volunteers need to know about the day of the event," Ashley Barnett said, "We'll tell everybody what time to arrive, how to get their officialt-shirts, where they will be placed, and everything. I want us to all be on the same page and make sure everybody is aware of how the day will function." The Tour de Georgia will be racing through the streets of Washington on Wednesday morning, April 23. From the start at 11 a.m. on The Square, crowds of thousands of spectators will line the race route along East Robert Toombs to East Street, then to Hill Street to Poplar Drive, then out of the city on Old Tignall Road to Highway 17. Volunteers are needed to block driveways along the route as the racers pass by. Police, deputies, and Georgia State Troopers will block vehicular traffic at roads and streets, and escort the racers. Volunteers will block only driveways along the route as the racers pass by. "The part that volunteers do will be very easy," Barnett said, "and it won't really last long at all. The racers will be out of town by 10 minutes after the start." Volunteers will be vital to the smooth running of the stage start here, and more are needed. "We really need lots of people to help. This is such an exciting event for Washington!" she said. The community has planned several ancillary events to make the Tour de Georgia a big celebration for Washington-Wilkes, Barnett said. The night before the race start, Tuesday night, April 22, the Washington Wilkes Arts Foundation is sponsoring a street dance featuring the award-winning band Playback. "As part of the Arts Foundation's April 'Month of Music,' Playback will be performing on the Square on April 22 beginning at 8 o'clock. The street dance is free and open to the public in honor of Washington's participation in the Tour de Georgia," W-WAF's Debbie Wells said. "Playback was voted best R&B band in Augusta by readers of Augusta Magazine for 2007." Washington Farmers Market will present free music celebrating Earth Day and Tour de Georgia Wednesday, and Gallery LaPlace is having a special exhibit by artist Jack Delany featuring paintings of bicycle tour racing. "His works in oil and acrylic on canvas offer the artist's perspective on this fascinating sport," said Debbie Wells. On Wednesday morning, the day of the race, music will start at 8 a.m. with the Friends Band and Bragg & Hughes. Tour de Georgia organizers will be holding an Autograph Alley for cycling fans to meet the professional cyclists and get autographs from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on The Square.
"We're really going to have a festival atmosphere on The Square Wednesday morning, and the more people who come out the better," Barnett said. "The world will be watching. They say that 50 million people around the world will be tuning in to see the stage start that day in Washington! I hope you are all excited about this awesome opportunity for our community."
