Career deputy sheriff Mark Moore announces candidacy for Sheriff

MOORE
Mark Moore, career law enforcement officer and lifelong Wilkes County resident, has announced his candidacy for Sheriff of Wilkes County.

Moore and his wife, the former Bes Broome of Washington, have two adult daughters, Abby Smith and Leah Riordan.

With over 30 years of law enforcement experience, Moore was employed by the Wilkes County Sheriff's Department from 1974 through 2000 as Deputy Sheriff, Investigator, and Chief Deputy.

From 2001 to 2004, Moore was employed by the Greene County Sheriff's Officeas a Deputy Sheriff, Investigator, and later as the department's training officer.

Currently, Moore is a Captain/ Deputy Sheriff with the Taliaferro County Sheriff's Office.

Besides meeting the minimum requirements, Moore says that his law enforcement training and experience separates him from other candidates.

"I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro," he said. "I'm a graduate of the FBI Academy, an advanced law enforcement training and management school, attended over 60 specialized law enforcement training schools, and have over 2,500 hours of advanced and in-service law enforcement training hours."

Moore's work experience, he said, includes patrol and traffic enforcement, accident investigations, criminal/arrest and search warrants, civil process, court services, juve- nile law, family violence, supervision of employees, jail operations and management, departmental and jail policy construction, law enforcement budgets, the investigation and documentation of complex criminal investigations, crime scene technician, and law enforcement trainer. "I have also testified in municipal, state, and federal courts concerning hundreds of criminal cases and prosecutions."

Moore said if elected Sheriff, "I will faithfully carry out the lawful duties of the office of Sheriff. I will develop and maintain a professional law enforcement agency dedicated to protecting and serving all citizens of Wilkes County."

Identifying the county's top crimes, he said, "I believe that the major crime problems in Wilkes County at this time are commercial and residential burglary and theft, and the illegal distribution of drugs in our community. These crimes most affect our daily lives and the safety of our families. My education, training, and work background make me the most qualified person to address these problems. I will work toward preventing, solving, and prosecuting these crimes in our community."

As Sheriff, Moore says, "I will strive to have a close working relationship with other law enforcement agencies working in Wilkes County. I will work closely with the Wilkes County school system to promote student safety. I will make any changes necessary in departmental policies to better serve the citizens of Wilkes County. I will promote fair and equal hiring practices."

In addition, he said, he will urge citizen/law enforcement communication regarding suggestions and complaints for the Sheriff's Office.

His experience, he says, will help him provide public safety within a budget. "With over 20 years experience in preparing and writing law enforcement budgets, I believe that the Sheriff must be fiscally responsible to the taxpayers. I realize that with the rising cost of doing business, we must look for ways to keep costs down without cutting services that affect public safety."

Finally, he said. "To the voters of Wilkes County, I am the candidate most qualified and prepared to serve the people of Wilkes County as your new Sheriff - please vote on July 15."
