RAYLE NEWS Sardis Baptist Church will have homecoming on Sunday, May 4. Bryan Edwards, former pastor of Sardis, will be bringing the message and Tom Wells will be leading the singing. Tom is also one of our own and was a member of Sardis for many years. A covered dish dinner will be held after the service. Following dinner, "The New Apostles" of Crawfordville will come to sing. Everyone at Sardis is looking forward to this event and seeing folks come back home to Sardis. Everyone is invited. • On Sunday morning, Pastor Jim Newsome brought the message on "Gentleness" and the Bible reading was from Galatians at Sardis Baptist Church. Pam Hall played the piano as Joyce Fry led in the congregational singing. Pam Hall was recognized for her birthday which was April 3 and her good job as pianist. The ladies ensemble (Joyce Fry, Denise Armour, Pam Hall, and Monica Gunter) sang "Jesus Is the Sweetest Name I know." Pastor Newsome gave the children a good little message at the altar after which they went downstairs to the annex with Cody Armour for children's church. Sunday School starts at 10 a.m.; worship service at 11:00; and Sunday evening service at 7 p.m. every Sunday. Sardis holds prayer meeting at the Echols Home every Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. Sunday School is held every Sunday morning at 10 a.m. at the Echols Home with Nina Boatwright as teacher. • Family night will be held Sunday evening at 6 p.m. with mission meetings following. The regular worship service will not be held. • There were several visitors in the congregation at Sardis Sunday morning. Four ladies from Virginia were there who had come for the Tour of Homes in Washington Saturday. Three were cousins and relatives of Sam Callaway and Wilbur Callaway and one of them had lived here in Rayle as a young lady. One recalled spending time at the home of Betty Jo Callaway and her parents who lived where Larry and Janice Callaway now live. They also had ties to Sardis. The mother of one of them had played the organ at Sardis at one time as a young girl. The other lady was their friend. Lonnie Pierce was present with two young children that I did not get their names. Laura Hutchins and her son Nicky of Cumming and Blake and Walker Lanier were also present. Teresa, daughter of Preston and Joyce Fray, was also present. • We deeply sympathize with the family of Betsy Wynne who passed away Sunday after a long illness. • Natalie Ingerman and her greatgranddaughter, Jillana Mahon, of Clearmont, Fla., and Jillana's friend, Amanda Fairless, of Paisley, Fla., spent the week of March 31 through April 5 with Bob and Pat Preston. The girls rode horses, fished in the Prestons' pond, rode the tractor and visited Downtown Washington during their visit. The girls also enjoyed playing tricks on the adults. Wednesday evening Ann Williamson had dinner with the Prestons and enjoyed a special dish, seafood lasagna, made by Natalie.
• Lamar Berry had a biopsy of his throat Friday at Athens Regional Medical Center Outpatient Clinic. The result is not in yet. • Wilda Boatwright and Sudie Kennedy went to Thomson Tuesday to visit Hazel Webb. • James and Sharon Smith of Stephens came down Wednesday morning and treated J.W. and Bonnie Boatwright out to breakfast at Poss Umm Cafe. J.W. and James share the same birthday on April 3 and this was a celebration for them. James was 65 years of age and J.W. was 75. • Clyde and Sandy Whittington and Avery Hall went to Athens Sunday afternoon to the birthday party for Zachery Frankel at "Pump It Up." On their way back home they picked up Fred Weidner from the Armour Home in Lexington and brought him home for a couple of days to celebrate his birthday which is also this week. Clyde and Sandy, and Avery also visited Neil and Kim Frankel, Zachery, Kyle, and Bryce Saturday. • Buck and Linda Echols' Sunday dinner and spend the day guests were Scott and Sissy Smith, Abby and J.T., and Richard and Lou Heard, Mattie and Hank. • Bonnie Boatwright enjoyed having Ruth Flynt visit her Wednesday afternoon and sit on the porch. • Tim and Gail Stewart, Alyssa Stewart, Paul and Hannah Wright, and Ava, had Sunday dinner with Johnny and Kathryn Shedd. • Bonnie Boatwright joined Martha Jones of Bogart and Frankie Jones of Athens Sunday afternoon for a trip to Carnesville to the beautiful new home of Harland and Martha Crane for a housewarming party. Others going from Rayle were Marshall and Mablean Sherrer, and Billy and Doris Walker. They saw many friends from Oglethorpe County and other relatives whom they were glad to see. Many of Mablean's classmates of the 1954 Class of Oglethorpe County of which Martha Crane was also a member were there.
