Chamber of Commerce adds 80 members; more members needed to boost business

The Washington-Wilkes Chamber of Commerce has added more than 80 new members so far in its annual Membership Drive, treasurer Ed Pope III said, but still urgently needs everyone interested in economic development and the growth of jobs in Wilkes County to join.

"I've been bowled over by everyone's response to the membership drive," Pope said. "The members of our Chamber board of directors have gone out and talked personally with many former members and long-time supporters, and we've really gotten good response from the community."

Pope said that the Chamber is getting back in the black, and moving to the point where it can start offering more programs that support local businesses. "We want to benefit all the businesses of Wilkes County," Pope said.

The Chamber's office, now a Georgia Regional Visitor Center, is also helping attract new businesses and families, Barnett said. "The Chamber of Commerce and Welcome Center is usually the first stop not only for tourists - some 4,500 signed our guest book last year - but for people looking to do business in Wilkes County, asking for directions to a business, or finding city or county offices."

Since the Chamber and Visitor Center is place where all types of visitors come - business, political, and agri-business, she said, "It's so important that the Chamber of Commerce and Welcome Center is located on The Square. We are in a great location and excited about the years to come. Membership in the Chamber makes it possible for us to attract and serve businesses and grow jobs, in addition to helping existing businesses survive and thrive here."

The Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors for 2008 include Blake Thompson as president; Ed Pope III, treasurer; Casey Jackson; Jim Baston; Newt Gunter; Robert Geiger; Sue Davidson; Jane Bundy; and Mike Scarborough.

Other benefits of membership include advertising specials, listing on the new WashingtonWilkes. org website, discount insurance from Griggs-Ficklin, discounts to Chamber-sponsored events, inclusion in the membership directory, regular e-mail updates and discount/ coupon offers in newsletters.

Chamber membership also provides ribbon cuttings for new businesses, educational seminars, a Downtown Dollar list, and free CPR classes. Members can also take advantage of the opportunity to display their business information in the Chamber of Commerce.
