Wills head of nursing Jane Echols declares candidacy for Coroner

ECHOLS
Jane Lindsey Echols, Director of Nursing at Wills Memorial Hospital, has announced her candidacy for Wilkes County Coroner. The primary election is July 15.

Born and raised in Washington, Echols is the daughter of Buddy and Alice Lindsey, and the daughter-inlaw of James and Rebecca Echols. Married to Glen Echols for 20 years, she is mother of Graham 15, Jordan 13, and Jesse 11. They live in Tignall.

Echols graduated from Augusta College (now Augusta State University) in 1988 with an Associate Degree of Science in Nursing. "I'll graduate with my BSN from the University of Phoenix in May of this year," she said.

Her 20-year nursing career has only recently brought her back to Wilkes County. "After I graduated from nursing school in 1988, I began working the night shift at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, as a staff nurse."

In 1989, Echols took a night-shift charge nurse position and continued in that role for the next 11 years. "During part of that time, I also served as Assistant Chief Flight Nurse for Humana Air, a helicopter service transporting burn patients to the burn center."

In 2000, Echols took a day shift position as staff nurse and part time research nurse, then in 2003 took the Clinical Educator role in the burn center and continued until 2006.

In June of 2006, Echols said, "I made a huge career move. I accepted the position as Director of Nursing at Wills Memorial Hospital."

Echols' credentials and certifications include certificationto teach CPR, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Life Support, and Advanced Burn Life Support. A certified HIV counselor, she has taught emergency burn care for 20 years to various hospitals, EMS services, and flight services across a five-state area.

She continues to lecture and teach for the CSRA Critical Care courses three times per year sponsored by the CSRA AACN Chapter in Augusta. She served as President of the CSRA AACN Chapter from 2005-2006.

In January of 2007 she passed the Critical Care Nursing certificationexam (CCRN).

In November 2007, she co-authored and published an article in the Journal of Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing.

"My decision to run for county coroner arises from an interest in serving my community from a medical and judicial standpoint. I have been in the medical field for 20 years and enjoy being challenged with new knowledge and skills," Echols said.

"If elected, I look forward to learning this new role, and helping to ensure the dignity and privacy of all involved during death investigations, whether by natural, sudden, or suspicious causes. I hope to use my nursing knowledge to enhance my abilities in the coroner role, as frequently families do find great comfort when they understand exactly how and why their loved one died."
