'Accused, tried, and already convicted'

TO THE EDITOR:

Recently, here in Washington, a tragic incident occurred. The incident I'm referring to is the accidental shooting of a 15-year-old by another his same age. Like everyone else, I too am disturbed. You see, I am a proud and loving parent and wish no harm on any child.

However tragic this occurrence might be, I was appalled at the mention of my name as the "drug dealer that supplied the weapon!" I did not nor ever have I sold a firearm to a child. Not only is selling a firearm to a child reckless, irresponsible, and dangerous - this is very foolish. Whoever sold this child a gun was waiting for an incident such as the accidental shooting to happen. Adults oftentimes use bad judgement in handling weapons. It is well known that children lack the necessary skills and judgement to handle a gun.

I am innocent of any involvement in this case. Yes, a crime was committed but not by me. My name was mentioned, so the officersays, then openly printed in the newspaper. Even after a thorough investigation and the truth is exposed, I will still be associated with this crime because my name has been permanently tarnished and slandered. OfficerNelson hastily reported the accusations of two very frightened youth, one that was injured and the second one traumatized by his own actions.

The truth is forthcoming. I did not sell that boy a gun. I may have my crosses to bear, but this definitely isn't one of them. Therefore, a civil lawsuit will be filed on my behalf for libel and defamation of character. You see, I've been accused, charged, and convicted already - in this very same newspaper.
