New theater is a hit with state-of-the-art picture and sound

Retro Cinema & Books, Washington Wilkes' newest business, opened its doors to the public Friday, April 11. The business is located in the building known as the Singleton building next door to the Washington police department and the former officesof Dr. W.C. Branan on Spring Street.

Dana Kibbey, who with her husband Richard owns the store, said that the customers during the weekend loved the new books, DVDs, CDs and the first movie, "The Eye of the Dolphin."

"Our theater is state-of-the-art digital picture and sound," Mrs. Kibbey said. "We feature independent films and Sundance Festival Award Winners. We are a member of Emerging Pictures, a New York filmdistributing company."

She says that the most frequently asked question for them is "Do you really have a theater in there?" The customers were pleasantly surprised to findthat there is a theater with 60 seats, plenty of leg room, and a complete concession area offering popcorn, drinks, candy and hotdogs.

Movies will be shown on Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 and matinees will be on Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. A special kids matinee will be added later in the month.

Richard Kibby has decorated the bookstore and wine bar with rare Hollywood memorabilia from his private collection. He says that customers have found the mixture of books and memorabilia to be fascinating -- like a mixture of a museum and bookstore.

The Kibbeys will be hosting book signings and special movie nights each month. The wine bar will be opening soon.

Movies scheduled for this weekend are "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" -- Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.; and "In the Shadow of the Moon" -- Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

The address is 114 Spring Street.
