Tour de Georgia has successful stage start here
Pro riders gave autographs before the stage start of the 2008 Tour de Georgia sponsored by AT&T in Washington Wednesday. The event brought world-class professional cycling to Wilkes County for the first time ever, and local organizing committee members and volunteers led by Tourism Director Ashley Barnett helped with security, hospitality, set-up, and course marshal duties, working alongside Tour staffers to set up the race facilities that filled the west side of The Square.
At the start, some 150 top riders rode off down East Robert Toombs with crowds lining the street, and rode by an appreciative crowd of students at W-W Elementary School, before racing out of town toward Gainesville 106 miles away. "I've been so impressed with the welcome we've received in Washington, and how well organized your local committee has been," said Tour organizer Kelly Greene. "I hope we come back to Washington again."
