Baseball team the best in region; Students learn about natural gas

The Washington-Wilkes Middle School baseball team played in a championship tournament on Saturday, April 19, at 10 p.m. at Sweetwater Park in Thomson. In the first game, they played against Glascock and won by the score of 6-1. The second game was a defeat for the Tigers. They lost by the score of 3-2 after 10 innings. They placed second in the region.

The CRCT will be taking place from April 21-25. During this week students should get a good night's rest and eat a hearty breakfast. Students must be at school each day and must not be tardy. They must make every effort to do their best on the CRCT. Students who perform at their best and do not create any behavior issues during testing week will be eligible to attend a CRCT dance from 1:30-3 p.m. in the gym on Friday, April 25. Make-ups for the test will take place on April 28 and 29. Also, parents may pick up progress reports during Open House on April 28 from 3:30-6 p.m. Those not picked up will be sent home the following day as usual.

During the school year, Amethyst Wynn, middle school graduation coach, initiated an incentive program for the graduation coach students to motivate them to strive for academic excellence and overall good behavior. Students who have shown overall improvement, especially academically and behaviorally, are given a special reward or treat, such as a field trip. On the Friday before spring break, April 4, the graduation coach students enjoyed a trip to the Atlanta Hawks vs. Philadelphia 76ers game at Philips Arena in Atlanta. It was a close and exciting game down to the Hawks' 109-104 loss. The children were excited from start to finish: no rain or game loss could "quell their yells," according to Wynn.

REMINDER: For all eighth grade parents and guardians, there will be a parent meeting on April 28 at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria. Please attend in order to schedule your child's high school classes for next year.

The middle school band is having its spring concert at the Robert Toombs House on May 6 at 6:30 p.m. The band students will be playing from their class books and sheet music. Please come out and support the Tiger Band program.
