Taliaferro County band will present concert on May 20

The Taliaferro County Band program will present its annual spring concert at the school on May 20.

The band is under the direction of Joan Cole who is in her seventh year at the Taliaferro County School (TCS) More than 50 students will perform for parents, teachers, and members of the Crawfordville community.

In addition to an evening of entertainment, the band will also sponsor a barbecue dinner with all the traditional trimmings. The barbecue and sauce will be provided by Frank and Lou Bentley of Washington who are known for their excellent food.

Tickets for the barbecue dinner are $8.00 which will include pulled pork, sauce, coleslaw, baked beans, bread, tea or water, and homemade cake. All proceeds will go to the TCS Band program. Tickets will go on sale April 28 with the sale ending on May 14. Tickets must be purchased in advance and will not be sold at the door.

Tickets are available from any TCS band student, a band parent, or from Director Cole. Dinner service will begin at 6 p.m. with the concert to follow.

This year, the TCS band program includes four performing groups: the beginning band, the wind ensemble, the high school jazz band, and percussion ensemble.

The bands will perform a variety of music from the traditional to today's hits. The concert will include: Colonel Bogey by Alford; African Festival by Hilliard; and the ever-popular Let There Be Peace On Earth featuring singer Egypt Thomas, a senior at TCS.

The percussion ensemble will also perform a collection of great features which shows the versatility and talent of all the TCS band students.

The ensemble will perform The Thunderer by John Phillip Sousa; Brazil by Ary Babrroso; Oye Como Va by Tito Puente; and will close with Duke Ellington's famous CJam Blues.

The final group to perform will be the TCS Jazz Band. This group performed earlier this month for students at the Washington-Wilkes Primary School and at Augusta Mall. They will conclude the concert with the all-time American favorite rock song, Proud Mary by John Fogerty.
