Tigers beat Oglethorpe in extra innings to finish second in 8AA

CALEB SAGGUS STROKES A HIT FOR THE TIGERS He also stole his 31st base of the 2008 season in last Thursday's game against Oglethorpe.
There was no way the Washington Wilkes Tigers could overtake North Oconee in the Region 8AA South race last week so the loss to the Titans on Tuesday, April 15, made little difference - at least at the end. What did make the difference was a bounce-back extra-innings win over Oglethorpe on Thursday that put W-W in second place and secured a home stand for the playoffs.

With a region record of 9-6, the Tigers finished just ahead of Oglethorpe in third place and Morgan County finished fourth. The Patriots and the Bulldogs will be travelling north for their playoff games. North Oconee remained as the only perfect in the region, north or south.

The week's action started on Tuesday when the Tigers traveled to North Oconee and lost 10-5. Th Titans got off to a hot start scoring eight runs in the first three innings, but the Tigers rallied back scoring two in the fourth and three in the fifth to close the lead to 8-5. North Oconee added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 10-5.

Kelley Roberts absorbed the loss dropping his record to 3-3. Leading hitters for the Tigers were Jerrick Darracott, 2-4, 2b; D.J. Barnett, 1-3, RBI; Whit Chafin,1-2; and Lee Thompson, 1-2.

Then on Thursday, the Tigers hosted Oglethorpe and pulled out a 5-4 win in eight innings. Caleb Saggus started the game going 2.2 innings before being relieved by Barnett who pitched the remaining 5.1 innings allowing 1 hit (HR) to pick up his second win of the season.

The Tigers scored two runs in the first after Saggus scored from a double off the bat of Barnett. Drew Wilson then scored Barnett on a hit up the middle.

The Tigers added two more runs in the fourth after a Patriot error allowed Zach Murray to score from third base on a failed suicide squeeze. Chafin later scored on a single by Hunter Jackson to tie the game at 4-4.

The Tigers held Oglethorpe scoreless in the top of the eighth. During the bottom half of the eighth inning with two outs, Barnett hit a walk off homerun to win the game 5-4 and move the Tigers to the No. 2 seed in 8AA South.

Highlights off the game included Wilson throwing out 3-out-of-4 baserunners, Saggus stealing his 31st base of the season (only 6 behind his record 37 stolen bases from last year), and Barnett hitting a walk off homerun.
