Qualifying for July 15 primary election sees 12 Wilkes County candidates so far

Qualifying will close Friday at noon for the General Primary election in July, and numerous Wilkes County candidates have already qualified by press time for this issue.

Candidates who had qualified as of the end of business on Tuesday, April 29 included:

For Clerk of Superior Court - Mildred Peeler (incumbent);

For Wilkes County Sheriff - Tim Crook, Jeff Johnson, Mark A. Moore, and Mike Sisson;

For Wilkes County Tax Commissioner - Mary W. Hubbard (incumbent);

For Wilkes County Coroner - Jane Echols;

For Wilkes County Surveyor - Jack Newsome (incumbent);

For Board of Commissioners District 1 - Divenski Lee (incumbent); and

For Board of Commissioners District 2 - Ed Geddings, Donna B. Hardy (incumbent), and Olin C. Newby.

All of the above candidates qualified as Democratic Party candidates with the exception of Jeff Johnson, who qualified as a Republican.

Supervisor of Elections Judge Jim Burton said that the qualifying period began at 9 a.m. Monday, April 28, and will close at noon on Friday, May 2. "The following officeswill be on the ballot in the July 15 General Primary and will qualify locally," Burton said, "Sheriff, Clerk of Superior Court, Tax Commissioner, Coroner, Surveyor, Board of Commissioners District 1 and 2."

All qualifying is being done in the officeof the Supervisor of Elections, Room 422 in the Wilkes County Courthouse.

Nonpartisan candidates for the offices of Probate Judge, Chief Magistrate, and Board of Education Chairman and Districts 3 and 4 board members will qualify June 23 through June 27 and will appear on the ballot for the General Election in November.

In January, the Wilkes County Board of Commissioners approved qualifying fees for each officeat 3 percent of the respective salaries. Those fees are as follows: for Wilkes County Sheriff, $1,407.54; for Wilkes County Tax Commissioner, Clerk of Court, Probate Judge, and Magistrate Judge, $1,229.03; for Coroner, $108.00; for Surveyor, $10.00; and for two seats on the Board of Commissioners (Districts 1 and 2), two seats on the Board of Education (Districts 3 and 4); and chairman of the Board of Education, $72.00.

Candidates are reminded that an announcement article of their intention to seek officewill be run free of charge in The News-Reporter one time. However, information for such an article must be received by the newspaper not later than one week after the close of qualifying. Candidates are responsible for providing the information and will not be contacted by this newspaper.
