Observance is today at noon

The public is invited to today's observance of the National Day of Prayer.

The local observance, led by Wilkes Ministers United, will be held at noon to 12:30 today, May 1, on The Square in Washington, and everyone is encouraged to come and take part, organizer Rev. Gale Seibert said.

"What if we don't respond to the call of prayer?" she said. "What happens to the economy, to the drought, to having enough food? God is waiting and watching - can't we step away for 30 minutes and pray?"

Singing will be led by Andy Perryman. The theme scripture is Psalm 28:7: "The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and I am helped."

The Washington observance is just one of hundreds across the nation today. The U.S. Congress set aside the first Thursday in May as the National Day of Prayer in 1988 to encourage communities around the country to take time to pray for leaders and those in authority at the local, state, and national levels.

"I invite everybody to come to The Square from 12 to 12:30," Seibert said, "and pray for our state, our nation, and our world."
