May is Better Speech and Hearing Month
THE ACADEMIC CORNER

Since May is Better Speech and Hearing Month it is a wonderful time to remind parents how important it is to talk to their child and help him discover and label the world around him. Children learn language in many different ways. They learn language through everyday experiences at home and at school. Children need to hear language in order to learn it. Studies have shown that intelligence scores and language abilities are enhanced when parents speak to their children. A child's academic success at age ten is attributed to the amount of talk he hears from birth to age three. Parents who talk with their children help them learn to interact and communicate successfully.

Parents promote language and vocabulary development when they describe what a child is doing, looking at, hearing, or touching. By adding on, repeating, rephrasing, or extending the child's words and actions, parents model vocabulary and complex grammatical structures. Everyday routines and even boring chores can be turned into wonderful language learning opportunities. Mealtimes are the perfect opportunity to strengthen your child's language skills. Describe the foods you are using and talk about the steps needed to prepare a recipe. This is also a great time to work on developing your child's ability to follow directions. When you go to the grocery store, talk to your child about the different categories of foods (fruits, vegetables, cereals, etc.), the different shapes and colors of foods, and the different packages of food items. Spending time reading with your child is another wonderful way to promote language and vocabulary development.

Children learn words and the rules for using them by listening to others talk. Therefore, what you say and how you say it is an important influence on your child! (This space paid for by the Wilkes County Board of Education.)
