Kettle Creek DAR group meets at Wansley home on April 21

The Kettle Creek Chapter DAR met Monday, April 21, in Thomson to visit Alexandria, the home of William and Stevie Wansley and their daughter, Elizabeth.

Alexandria was built circa 1803- 06 by Thomas Carr and is the oldest documented brick house in Georgia. Built in the Federal style with brick made on the property, it stands on a high elevation in the Sand Hills of McDuffie County with a fantastic view of the surrounding forest. It was noted that it is very unusual for a house of this age to still have the same "footprint" as it did when it was built. Alexandria has been authentically restored by the Wansleys to reflectlife in an earlier period of Georgia.

After the tour, members met at White Columns in Thomson for lunch and a short business meeting.

Reports were given on the State Conference held in Athens March 28-30. Oleta McAvoy attended the Memorial Service for deceased members where Carla Thaxton Brown was remembered. Ginny Broome, Betty Slaton and Joanne Pollock attended the meetings on Saturday including the Regents Banquet in the evening. Certificates received by the Chapter were shown.

Nina Albea reminded members that she would still be collecting birthday presents for the children at Tamassee at the May meeting.

A grave marking ceremony was held for Patriot Purnal Truitt on April 12 at the Brown-Hardin Cemetery on Scull Shoals Road. Nancy Ray Sisson and her granddaughters, Mallory and Madison Powell, who are direct descendants of Purnal Truitt, presented the wreath for the Kettle Creek Chapter.

Approved as officersfor the years 2008-2010 were Carolyn Bryant Faz, regent; Laura W. Toburen, first vice-regent; Oleta E. McAvoy, second vice-regent; Ginny B. Broome, chaplain; Marian H. Thorpe, recording secretary; Paula H. Butts, corresponding secretary; Jane B. Burton, treasurer; Betty A. Slaton, registrar; Lillie M. Crowe, historian; and Maxine H. Singleton, librarian. They will be installed at the May meeting.
