Tigers to face top-ranked Wesleyan Friday
Wesleyan went into its own seeding games as No. 3 in the region and No. 3 in the GaSports.com coaches' poll. But the Wolves demolished the No. 1 Holy Innocents team 13-1 and emerged as region champion and the state's new No. 1 team. Holy Innocents dropped to No. 3. The other two Region 6-AA playoff teams, Lovett and Greater Atlanta Christian, are ranked No. 8 and No. 10 in the state poll, respectively. So even if the Tigers had won two games and the region championship, they would have been facing a Top Ten team this week anyway. The Wolves are an impressive 20- 3-1 (the tie game was called in the eighth due to darkness) for the year with a 15-1 region record having lost only to Holy Innocents earlier in the season. They have scored 218 runs to the collective opponents' 55 this year for an average score of 9-2. Game one of the best-of-three series with Wesleyan will begin this Friday, May 9, at 4 p.m. Game two will be played 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. A third game, if necessary, will be play on Saturday, May 10, at 4 p.m. Wesleyan is located at 5405 Spalding Drive in Norcross. Tiger fans who want to make the trip should take I-20 to I-285 North and then take exit 31B to merge onto Georgia Hwy. 141N/Peachtree Industrial Blvd. After four miles, take a slight left at Peachtree Parkway NW following signs for Dahlonega/ GA-141N/GA-400/Cumming. After about two more miles, turn right at Spalding Drive and go about a quarter of a mile. Region 6-AA playoff games played last Friday were reported by Tiger Head Coach Rob Jackson. Tigers 2, Fannin 6 Drew Wilson pitched well going 5.1 innings allowing four runs. But against Fannin's pitching, the Tigers could only manage four hits in the game. Hunter Jackson had an RBI sac flyin the fifth scoring Ty McGill who had walked and stolen second base and then reached third on a wild pitch. Caleb Saggus led off the sixth with a double and later scored on an RBI single by Wilson. Tigers 4, Banks County 7 Kelley Roberts pitched fiveinnings allowing only three runs, two of which were scored in the first inning on a leadoff home run and a pair of singles.
The Tigers collected eight hits but were just 2/10 with runners in scoring position. D.J. Barnett hit a solo home run in the first inning. Leading hitters for the Tigers were Saggus 1-3, 2b; Barnett 3-4, hr, 2b; Jerrick Darracott 1-4; Zach Murray 1-3; Ty McGill 1-2; and Lee Thompson 1-2.
