Mark Moore's primary win in Wilkes Sheriff's race is certified by election official On Friday, August 8, Supervisor of Elections Judge Jim Burton certified that Mark A. Moore is the winner in his bid to be the Democratic nominee for Sheriff of Wilkes County. "It was a hard campaign, and we got out and worked hard," Moore said. "I was lucky there was an extra good turnout, because we both had pretty strong support." Defeated by only a handful of votes, Wilkes Chief Deputy and acting Sheriff Mike Sisson said, "I appreciate the support that I found in the county, and I thank everyone who voted for me." But for Moore, the win last week was only the beginning. After the primary win, Moore will face Republican Jeff Johnson in the November General Election. "This just starts the race for November," Moore said, "and I think Jeff Johnson is going to run a strong campaign. I intend to get out and see as many people as I can, and ask for their support in November." Moore said he will continue to campaign on his 30-plus years of law enforcement experience and his qualifications as a deputy, investigator and chief deputy in Wilkes County from 1974 to 2000, and as deputy in neighboring counties since then. Last Tuesday's runoff results could not be certified until Friday, August 8, when all provisional ballots could be confirmed, and any outstanding military absentee ballots were due. Four provisional ballots were confirmed, and those voters were split 2-2 between the candidates. No more military ballots were returned. Final results show that Moore edged out Sisson by a vote of 1,416 to 1,405. The voter turnout in Wilkes County was remarkable for a runoff. More than 48 percent of eligible voters - some 2,746 out of 5,877 - cast ballots on runoff Tuesday.
In the only other issue on the ballot, Wilkes voters mirrored voters throughout the state, picking Jim Martin over Vernon Jones by a large margin to be the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, facing Sen. Saxby Chambliss in the fall.
