'Fun in the Sun' to fill Liberty St. Park with fun, food Sat. Liberty Street Park will echo with the sounds of fun and the smell of good food Saturday as the Washington Wilkes Parks and Recreation holds "Fun in the Sun 2008." The free event starts at noon and runs through 4 p.m., with a Dads' Grill-Off, watermelon-eating contests, fun and games, and concessions, director Pete Gartrell said. The Dads' Grill-Off begins at noon, with tasting to begin at 3 p.m. "Each dad is asked to bring his own grill, grilling tools, meat, and marinating sauce," Gartrell said. "A panel of judges will decide the winner." Participants in the grill-off must call the Recreation Department at 706-678-1454 to sign up in advance. The fun and games will include a water sprinkler and slip 'n' slide, a blow-up jumper, sack races and jump-rope contests, volleyball games, a basketball shooting contest, and face painting. Gartrell says the activities scheduled include a dunking booth, a hula hoop contest, one-legged races, and a raffle. The watermelon-eating contest at 2 p.m. is open to all kids from ages 5 to 12.
"We want everyone to come out and have a family fun-filled day," he said.
