James Edward Beard

Funeral services for James Edward Beard, 73, of Thomson, previously of St. Helena Island, S.C., were held Saturday, August 9, 2008, at Phillips Mill Baptist Church, Washington, with Rev. Robert Rayner officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. He died August 6 in the McDuffie County Hospital, Thomson.

Mr. Beard was a native of St. Joseph, Louisiana, and was the son of the late TiIlmon Albert Beard and Ida Margaret Sykes Beard. He had retired from Dupont where he worked as a supervisor. He served in the National Guard for over 19 years and was a member of AMVETS Post 70 of Beaufort, S.C.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Mae Joyner Beard, Washington; two sons and daughters-in-law, James Edward Beard Jr. and Gaye Beard of Taylorsville, N.C., and Michael Kim Beard and Rachel Beard of Washington; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy Lynn and Barry Bennett of Thomson, and Lisa Carol and Bruce Ferguson of Georgetown, Texas; three brothers, Billy Beard of Meridian, Miss., Buddy Miller of Baston, Louisiana, and Buster Miller of Buna, Texas; four sisters, Ester Hester of Canton, Mary Downs, Washington, Pat McKiethen and Sandra Jones, Meridian; nine grandchildren, Eric, Jessica, Brittney and James Michael Beard, Jenny Johnson, Joe Goss, Kaitlin Braxton, Bruce Ferguson III, and Cameron Ferguson; and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers included James Michael Beard, Joseph Goss, Benji McAvoy, Brett McAvoy, John Hester, and Leland Hester. Eric Beard, Paul Goss, and Doug Goss served as honorary pallbearers.

Hopkins Funeral Home of Washington was in charge of arrangements.
