Semester and exams are over; school to start back on January 6
The end of the semester is here and semester exams are over! School is out until January 6, and students will receive report cards on January 8. The Tiger Paw articles will resume the second week in January.
Students participated in a career exploration day Friday. The event began with an assembly in the gym that featured motivational speaker, Dr. Ralph L. Simpson, Assistant Superintendent of Dekalb County Schools and author of From Remedial to Remarkable. The students also heard from numerous young professionals who graduated from W-WCHS. Afterward, the students viewed exhibits from local businesses and organizations. Communities in Schools of Georgia and Wilkes County Community Partnership sponsored the event.
Christine Swager, a retired professor from the University of South Carolina, visited Katy Meech's fourth block Georgia studies class on Monday, December 15. Mrs. Swager, the author of Heroes of Kettle Creek, spoke to the class about The Battle of Kettle Creek, how the battle had a tremendous affect on the fight for independence between the patriots and the loyalists, and the leadership of Elijah Clarke and Andrew Pickens. "This was a wonderful learning opportunity for the students who also asked her questions about the research she has done on this important part of our American history," said Mrs. Meech.
The Student Council visited the Heritage Retirement Home on December 18. Students sang Christmas favorites to the residents. The residents enjoyed the visit and wished the students a very Merry Christmas.
In basketball, the Lady Tigers played against Warren County December 3. The loss was hard to take with a score of 26-29. They made a comeback with a win against Taliaferro on December 11. Their season final was against Elberton on December 16. They took a hard loss but cheered for the good season they all had. Congratulations Lady Tigers!
The W-WMS boys' basketball team played against Elbert Co. on Tuesday, December 16. Elbert County won the game 34-18. Brian Hardigree scored six points, Vincent Wilkerson scored six points, and Christian Keiser shot a three-pointer. They had a successful season with five wins and four losses. Congratulations Tigers!
Washington wrestled Madison County and Greenbrier on December 16. Most of the wrestlers got a pin or won by points. Alex Hackney won by a pin and lost by a pin. Coach Lovvorn said he was proud of his students for doing a good job on the mat.
