Wheelis WOM group meets Jan. 5, hears program on Liberia
The Frances Wheelis Women on Mission of the First Baptist Church met in the home of Susan Pope on Spring Street Monday evening, January 5.
Melanie Wells, facilitator, presided and opened with prayer.
Members joined in reading the WMU Watchword taken from Matthew.
Following the business meeting, Kay Nelms presented the program on the country of Liberia. She noted that Liberia means liberty. Her program focused on the founding of Rick's Institute, named after a Baptist farmer, Moses Ricks who bought 1000 acres for the faith-based coed campus. She related how the WMU is partnering with the Institute to provide all types of assistance to it and the orphanage. At the close of the program members voted to send $100 to Betty Carpenter that will be sent to the Institute for special needs. Members also voted as a continued part of the mission action to send $100 to Shaped by God in Canada.
Teresa Bishop offered the prayer calendar with focus on Western Africa and the concern of missionaries on how to best use funds received.
After the missionaries and those with special needs and concerns were named, Jackie Gillispie closed in prayer.
Mrs. Pope, assisted by Cheryl Edwards, served refreshments during a time of fellowship.
Present were Elizabeth Pope, Jackie Gillispie, Julia Palmer, Susan Pope, Melanie Wells, Kay Nelms, Teresa Bishop, Louise McClearen, Nancy Madden and Cheryl Edwards.
