Chili cookoff will determine which restaurant's is best
      A Wilkes County chili cooloff between six local restaurants has been planned for this Saturday, January 17, at Retro Cinema and Books, and money raised at the event will be donated to the North Alexander School Association's window restoration project.

Hospital will host diabetes course starting January 22
      Wills Memorial Hospital is planning a three-session course covering Diabetes Mellitus. The public is invited to the three sessions at no charge. The dates are January 22 and 29, and February 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the hospital library.

UCAP program to honor King at Third Shiloh Jan. 17 at 8:30
      Members of the United Community Awareness Program (UCAP) in Washington will have their annual breakfast January 17 at the Third Shiloh Building on McLendon Drive, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The program is in honor of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Speakers will be Rev. J.H. Andrews and Rev. C.D. Brown of Augusta. Cost of tickets for the breakfast is $6.

Milton Turner Wins Geography Bee
      Milton Turner has advanced to the next level of the National Geographic Society's National Georgraphy Bee after winning the first round at Washington-Wilkes Elementary School earlier this year. The competition for fourth through eighth graders is in its 21st year in thousands of schools across the United States and in the five U.S. territories.

W-WPS students enjoy musical concert by Hong Kong-born marimbist Cheung
      Once a year the children at the Washington-Wilkes Primary School are exposed to a renowned musician who comes to us through the University of Georgia (UGA) outreach program of the UGA Performing Arts Center. In the past we have heard artists on violin, cello, and piano. On Thursday, January 8, the students and faculty were entertained by Pius Cheung on the marimba.

      This has been a long week. J.W. got very sick once again and had to go to the emergency room Thursday morning for the second time within a week. He had nausea, vomiting, and dizziness, and I called 911 for an ambulance. The response was quick and efficient and the service we received at Wills Memorial Hospital Emergency Room was as good as we could want. J.W.
