Seniors honored at final season meet; team preparing for sectional tourney
Senior wrestlers and mat girls honored at the Tigers' final regular season meet included (l-r) Evan Harrison, Justin Guin, Josh McTier, Lindsey Guin, Haley Ward, Brandon Howard, Stacey Singletary, Casey Blackmon, and Lonnell Edwards. The Washington-Wilkes wrestling team concluded its regular season with a tri-meet at home on Friday, February 6. Prior to the matches seven senior wrestlers and two mat girls were recognized. Senior wrestlers for this year are Evan Harrison, Brandon Howard, Josh McTier (4 yrs.), Justin Guin, Stacey Singletary (2 yrs), Casey Blackmon, and Lonnell Edwards (1 yr). Senior mat girls are Lindsey Guin, who has served as head mat girl for four years, and Haley Ward. All of these young men and women will be greatly missed.
In the opening contest W-W dropped a close 40-36 decision to St. Francis. Ryen Scarboro, Evan Harrison, David Martin, Will Lawson, Tyrance Ashmore, and Brandon Howard all scored wins for the Tigers.
In the final match, W-W upset fifthranked Social Circle 40-33. Freshman 112-lb. wrestler Josh McElroy pinned his opponent in the final match to secure the win. Also during the match, senior 140-lb. wrestler Evan Harrison won his 100th career match. Other winners for the Tigers were Ryen Scarboro, James McAvoy, David Martin, Stacey Singletary, and Brandon Howard.
This Friday, February 13, Washington Wilkes will travel to Social Circle for the Class A East Sectional tournament. The top four wrestlers in each weight class will then advance to the state tournament. W-W will be one of 18 teams competing in this event.
